The M.A.D. 1 is a watch that aims to solve the problem of many people not being able to afford an MB&F piece well in the six figures. It follows the same ideology as the MB&F creations but is about as avant-garde as avant-garde gets in modern independent horology. The watch uses a Miyota 821A movement, which is disassembled and reworked in Büsser's Geneva workshop to power two rotating cylinders that display the time. The winding system is modified to accommodate the triple-blade rotor, and the fantastical case encapsulates this formerly pedestrian movement.

MB&F creations exist at the highest levels of horological execution, and M.A.D. Editions give us that at a much lower price point. The M.A.D. 1 is executed with the same level of thoughtfulness as any MB&F watch, and Büsser's range is incredible. Although there may be many who don't understand a watch like the M.A.D. 1, this watch is not for them. Not a single watch from MB&F or M.A.D. Editions is made for the masses on a philosophical level, but with the M.A.D. 1, you're getting that level of execution at a price that is for everyone.

MB&F, founded in 2005 by Maximilian Büsser, is a luxury watch, clock, and music box creator known for its unconventional and imaginative designs. Inspired by science fiction, retro-futuristic vehicle, and aquatic life influences, the brand's timepieces showcase a playful sophistication that has shaken up the industry. The Horological Machines series, which began with the Horological Machine No.1 (HM1) from 2007, featured a combination of science fiction, fantasy, and haute horology, displaying time like never before. The Legacy Machine series followed, featuring more conventional cases but equally unconventional movements/dials.

The brand's first timepieces were visually unique and set records, including the Horological Machine No.1 (HM1), which housed the world's first movement with four barrels connected in parallel and series, and the first automatic with instantaneous jumping hours, concentric retrograde minutes, retrograde date, and bi-hemisphere moon-phase. More than ten Horological Machine models have been produced with specialized HM3s, such as the HM3 Frog and the HM3 MegaWind.

The Legacy Machine series debuted in 2011, featuring a conventional case with unconventional dials and movements. The first piece to win two prizes at the 2012 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève was the Legacy Machine No. 1, featuring a large 14mm "flying" balance, twin arches, and independent time zones. Six Legacy Machine pieces have been produced thus far, most offering different takes on a common theme. The Legacy Machine FlyingT is the first MB&F watch designed specifically for women, while the Legacy Machine Perpetual adds an in-house perpetual calendar with new safety mechanisms.
