History & Significance
When Patek Philippe introduced the Golden Ellipse in 1968, the brand was exploring a new design language built around proportion and geometry rather than traditional round cases. The Ellipse was designed around the golden ratio, a mathematical relationship historically used in art and architecture to create visually balanced forms. The result was a watch that felt modern for its time but still distinctly elegant.
The model quickly became one of Patek Philippe’s most recognizable dress watches. Unlike the Calatrava, which relied on classic round symmetry, the Ellipse offered a softer oval profile with a wide bezel and minimal dial design. These watches were produced in a variety of sizes and configurations, often featuring simple Roman numeral dials and thin automatic movements that allowed the case to remain very slim on the wrist.
This reference 3589 represents the larger “Jumbo” automatic version of the Golden Ellipse. The warm champagne dial paired with black Roman numerals gives the watch a very traditional aesthetic, while the wide yellow gold case maintains the sculptural proportions that define the model.
Writer’s Thoughts
The Golden Ellipse is one of those watches that looks simple at first but becomes more interesting the longer you wear it. The oval shape sits differently from a round watch and gives it a lot of character on the wrist.
The jumbo automatic versions are especially appealing because they keep the elegant profile while adding a bit more presence. With the champagne dial and Roman numerals, this one feels very classic and easy to wear with just about anything.
