History and Significance
By the late 1980s and early 1990s, Blancpain had positioned itself very differently from much of the Swiss watch industry. While many brands were chasing sportier designs and quartz production, Blancpain leaned heavily into classical watchmaking with restrained case designs, traditional dial layouts, and an emphasis on mechanical movements. The Villeret collection became the clearest expression of that philosophy.
This particular example stands out because of its uncommon yellow mother-of-pearl dial. Most Villeret models from the period were produced with white, cream, or silver dials, making this warmer champagne-toned mother-of-pearl configuration significantly less common to encounter today. Depending on lighting, the dial shifts between pale gold, cream, and soft yellow tones, giving the watch a very understated depth without becoming flashy.
The proportions are also very much of the era in the best way possible. At 29mm, the case wears elegantly and close to the wrist, especially paired with the thin automatic movement and curved lugs. The applied Roman numerals, leaf hands, stepped bezel, and signed crown all reinforce the restrained dress-watch approach Blancpain was known for during this period. It also retains its original Blancpain gold buckle, paired with a newer green leather strap that works surprisingly well against the warm dial tone.
Writer's Thoughts
The yellow mother-of-pearl dial gives it a softness that photographs differently in every angle, and the green strap adds contrast in a fun and unique way. It feels very classic in design but still a little unusual, which is usually the sweet spot for vintage dress watches.
