History and Significance

The IWC reference IW3750 is one of those watches that becomes far more interesting once the story behind the movement is understood. During the 1980s, complicated mechanical watchmaking was hardly the obvious direction for a company to pursue. Quartz had fundamentally changed the industry, and the perpetual calendar remained the sort of complication associated with expensive, delicate watches that required an expert to adjust. Kurt Klaus approached the problem differently.

His perpetual calendar mechanism was designed around usability. Instead of giving the owner separate correctors for the different calendar indications, the system allows the calendar to be advanced through the crown, with the displays moving together in synchronization. Day, date, month, moon phase, and year remain mechanically connected. It was an unusually practical solution to one of traditional watchmaking's least practical complications.

The four-digit year display is perhaps the most charming part of the entire idea. There is something wonderfully ambitious about building a mechanical wristwatch with a physical year indication designed to continue well beyond the era in which the watch was created. The little century insert also turns an otherwise abstract promise of longevity into something tangible. It is a tiny component, but it perfectly captures the thinking behind the entire watch.

The IW3750 matters because it helped establish complicated watchmaking as a major part of modern IWC. It was not an exercise in making a perpetual calendar more mysterious or difficult. The cleverness was in making an intimidating complication unusually approachable. That philosophy would become enormously important to the manufacture, and the Kurt Klaus perpetual calendar remains one of the clearest examples of engineering being used to make traditional watchmaking more enjoyable rather than simply more complicated.

The best thing about the IW3750 is that the clever part is not immediately obvious. At first it is simply a handsome complicated IWC with a lot happening on the dial. Then the Kurt Klaus mechanism is understood, and suddenly the watch has an entirely different personality. The complication feels like it was designed by someone who actually wanted the owner to use it.

There is also something wonderfully optimistic about that year display. A mechanical watch carrying around the information needed to keep track of years far into the future feels almost absurd, but in exactly the right way. That mixture of old-school watchmaking and extremely practical engineering is what makes the IW3750 lovable. It is complicated without being complicated for complication's sake.
