History & Significance
Few watches are as closely tied to their design as the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Introduced in 1931, the model was originally created for British polo players in India who needed a watch that could withstand the impact of the sport. The solution was a reversible case that allowed the dial to be flipped inward, protecting the crystal during play. Over time, that clever engineering became one of the most recognizable case designs in watchmaking.
The Duoface complication builds on that concept by using the reversing case to display two completely different dials. Rather than simply protecting the watch, the reverse side becomes a second time zone display, making the watch practical for travel while maintaining the elegant Art Deco proportions that define the Reverso.
This reference 270.3.54 is a particularly interesting execution of the Duoface. The front dial features a warm salmon tone with guilloché textures and a day and night indicator integrated with the second time zone display. The reverse dial contrasts this with a darker, more contemporary aesthetic that displays a traditional time layout with small seconds. Salmon dial variants of the Duoface were produced in relatively small numbers and remain one of the more desirable configurations among collectors.
Writer’s Thoughts
The Reverso is one of those watches that works in almost any setting, but the salmon dial on this one makes it feel especially distinctive. The warm tone against the steel case gives the watch a lot of character without feeling flashy. It is also nice to know that salmon dial Reversos are not easy to find.
The Duoface is also one of the most practical Reversos to wear. Being able to flip the case and have a completely different dial on the other side gives it a versatility that few dress watches have. It feels like two watches in one.
