When A. Lange & Söhne returned in 1994, it had to establish an identity in a world dominated by Swiss watchmaking. Rather than imitate its neighbors, Lange leaned heavily into its German roots. Three-quarter plates, screwed gold chatons, hand-engraved balance cocks, and untreated German silver became signatures of the revived manufacture. Even its simplest watches were built with movements intended to be examined as closely as their dials.
The 1815 is perhaps the clearest expression of that philosophy. Named after Ferdinand Adolph Lange's birth year, the collection takes inspiration from traditional German pocket watches, with Arabic numerals, a railway-style minute track, and subsidiary seconds. There is nothing particularly extravagant about the dial, and that restraint is intentional. Reference 221.025 makes the formula considerably more special by housing it in platinum. The metal gives the watch a reassuring density in the hand while remaining almost completely anonymous on the wrist. Unless you know what you're looking at, there is very little indication that the simple white-metal case is made from one of watchmaking's most prestigious materials.
Flip it over and the restraint disappears. The sapphire caseback exposes the manually wound Lange movement and its traditional Glashütte construction. That contrast between the quiet front and obsessively finished movement is one of the reasons the 1815 has become such an important modern dress watch.

Platinum works perfectly with the 1815 because neither the metal nor the watch needs much attention. There is something satisfying about a watch that looks this simple from across the room but feels completely different the moment you pick it up.
The dial on this reference 221.025 is classic Lange. The Arabic numerals and railway minute track feel almost utilitarian, while the subsidiary seconds keeps the layout balanced. Then you turn the A. Lange & Söhne over and see where so much of the effort went. The movement finishing is almost absurd considering how restrained the front of the watch is.
We've fitted this example to a new canvas strap with a generic buckle, which makes the platinum 1815 feel a little less formal and considerably easier to wear casually. It is a serious watch without needing to look like one.
