History and Significance

Audemars Piguet was making exceptional watches long before the Royal Oak became the model most closely associated with its name. For much of the twentieth century, the manufacture's reputation was built around complicated movements, minute repeaters, perpetual calendars, and remarkably thin dress watches.

Ultra-thin watches also present a different kind of challenge in watchmaking. Removing thickness requires every component to be reconsidered, and Audemars Piguet spent decades developing the expertise necessary to produce watches that could virtually disappear beneath a shirt cuff. While this example uses a quartz movement, the philosophy remains the same: make the watch as elegant, slim, and unobtrusive as possible. The result is perhaps the opposite of what most people now imagine when they hear Audemars Piguet. That is precisely why we find it interesting.

Sometimes you want the AP nobody notices. At 31mm, this watch is small, incredibly thin, and almost aggressively understated compared with a modern Audemars Piguet. The yellow gold case gives it enough warmth to feel special, but everything else is remarkably restrained. There are no complications fighting for attention and no recognizable Royal Oak silhouette announcing what you're wearing.

It keeps an important original component with the watch while allowing the strap itself to start fresh. This is simply a classic AP dress watch from an era when thinness and proportion were enough.
