Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Military Dial (Ref. 14790ST)

History and Significance

The Royal Oak has spent more than five decades being reinterpreted, but some of its most interesting variations came during the years when Audemars Piguet was still willing to experiment with what a Royal Oak could look like. The 14790ST is already an important part of that story. Introduced as a midsize alternative to the larger Royal Oak, its 36mm case kept the Gérald Genta design intact while giving it proportions that feel remarkably balanced on the wrist.

This example takes the 14790 in an entirely different direction. Rather than the traditional tapisserie dial most collectors associate with the Royal Oak, it is fitted with the distinctive military dial. The black surface is dominated by oversized luminous Arabic numerals, broad luminous hands and a simple minute track around the perimeter. Remove the logo and case and the dial could almost belong to a purpose-built military or aviation watch.

That contrast is exactly what makes it so interesting. You still have the unmistakable octagonal bezel, exposed screws, sharply brushed case and integrated Royal Oak bracelet, but the dial gives the watch a much more utilitarian personality. It is one of the stranger and more charismatic configurations found within the older Royal Oak family.

Finding one is difficult enough, but finding one in this condition is considerably harder. This example remains remarkably sharp with very little evidence of wear, allowing both the architecture of the case and the unusual military dial to remain the focus of the watch.

This is one of those unusual Royal Oak configurations that doesn't need much explaining. The military dial completely changes the personality of the 14790ST.

The oversized numerals against the stark black dial feel surprisingly modern, especially inside the classic brushed steel Royal Oak case. More importantly, this example is in remarkably sharp condition with very little evidence of wear. The case retains strong definition, the bracelet presents beautifully, and the dial remains exceptionally clean. It is a great example of how much variety exists within older Royal Oaks once you move beyond the configurations everyone already knows.
