With Blancpain’s takeover by renowned watchmakers Jean-Claude Biver and Jacques Piguet in 1981, the world’s oldest watch brand dating to 1735 came roaring back to life. Under Biver and Piguet, Blancpain emerged as one of the most sophisticated and technically advanced watchmakers, rivalling the likes of Patek Philippe in movement quality and design. In this era of rebirth, Blancpain produced everything from high complication minute repeaters and perpetual calendars to sport chronographs to ultra-slim time-only dress watches.
As scholarship on Blancpain continues to grow, collectors are taking note of the brand’s historical significance and have begun to place these important timepieces in their collections. This much-deserved attention coupled with the surge of interest in ‘neo-vintage’ collecting has placed Blancpain in the ranks of the most collectible watch brands. Without a doubt here it will remain as one of the most important and collectible watchmakers of the ‘neo-vintage’ era.
We believe that Blancpain continues to offer incredible value to collectors when taking into consideration the very high quality production of these ‘neo-vintage’ timepieces. This is especially true of the Leman Flyback Ref. 2185 on offer. The particular example features a flyback chronograph enabling the user to reset the chronograph to zero and restart it without having to first stop it, which provides split-second accuracy. It is considered a technical masterpiece in chronograph development, and is highly desirable for these reasons.
The Ref. 2185 flyback features a beautifully proportioned 38mm case in 18K rose gold. This particular rose gold version is part of a limited edition of only 250 pieces, whereas the majority of Ref. 2185’s were not limited. Because it is a precious metal chronograph, the watch seamlessly bridges sport and dress watches and can easily be dressed up or dressed down. Perhaps one of the most beautiful features of this watch is its display caseback showing the high quality movement finishing and beautiful Côte de Genève patterned solid gold rotor. Engraved onto the rotor is the limited edition serial number of the watch.
This present example is in superb unpolished condition with deep hallmarks and flawless dial. It is preserved on its original strap with original Blancpain signed rose gold deployant and comes complete with its box, papers, and booklets. It is a true top condition full set collecting gem.
At a recent dinner in New York with a group of friends, I passed this Blancpain around and asked what they thought the cost was. The group consensus was that this was a $30,000+ watch. Considering its actual price, I believe that this watch is a steal and offers incredible collecting value. A steel Rolex Daytona chronograph is nearly double the cost of this watch. But here you get a solid 18K rose gold limited edition flyback chronograph with a much higher quality movement and finishing. You simply cannot beat that kind of value.
