Cartier Must de Tank Manual Raspberry Dial

History and Significance

The Must de Cartier Tank has always been a watch where color matters. During the collection's original run, Cartier moved far beyond the traditional silver Roman numeral dial and experimented with lacquered surfaces in burgundy, black, blue, and other rich colors. Decades later, those dials have become some of the most recognizable expressions of the Must de Cartier era.

But lacquer doesn't always remain the color Cartier intended. This example began life with a red dial that has naturally transformed into an extraordinarily bright raspberry tone. It is difficult to capture accurately in photographs because the color changes depending on the light, moving between vivid pink, raspberry red, and deeper burgundy around portions of the dial. We've handled plenty of Must Tanks over the years and haven't encountered another dial that has aged quite like this one.

The lacquer has also developed visible spidering across portions of its surface. We don't view that as something to disguise. It is part of the same aging process that created the color in the first place and gives this particular Tank an appearance that would be virtually impossible to reproduce intentionally.

Writer's Thoughts

A standard red Must de Cartier is already a great-looking watch, but this one has transformed into something completely different. The raspberry coloration is incredibly vibrant in person and looks fantastic surrounded by the warm gold-tone case. The spidering becomes visible when you look closely, but from the wrist your attention goes immediately to the color.

At 23mm, the Tank retains the traditional proportions that make these watches so easy to wear. Inside is a manual-wind movement, keeping the experience appropriately old-school, while we've fitted the watch to a new generic leather strap and retained its original Cartier buckle. We see plenty of Must Tanks. We haven't seen another one that looks like this.
