Cartier Midsize Cintree - Pristine Unpolished - Extremely Rare

Cartier, the great maker of shapes and jeweler to celebrities, is known for its many variations of the Tank watch. The Tank watch, since its production in 1919, has been front-and-center as one of the most iconic watch designs of all time. It all began with Louis Cartier’s Tank Normale, inspired by the treads of the French Renault FT-17 tank used in World War I. One wouldn’t think that one of the most famous dress watches of the 20th Century would be born from a military-inspired design, and yet this is what makes Louis Cartier the most masterful designer of his era. His ability to transform the bleak realities of World War I into such a heralded object of beauty shows the true genius of Louis Cartier. If only we could turn all of the hard realities of life into beauty as Louis was able to do! The good news is that when you place this watch on your wrist you will be so mesmerized by its beauty that you will surely forget any troubles that may be on your mind.

The Cintree is perhaps the most desired of all of the Tank variations. Its beautifully curved case has drawn the attention of collectors across the world. Over its many years, several different sizes of the Cintree have been produced, which have come to be classified as large, midsize, and small. We personally love the way that the midsize wears, and it is perhaps the best wearing of the three variations.

The present example is in pristine untouched condition housed in the classic 18K yellow gold curved case. We have never seen another midsize Cintree in this level of condition. It is evident that it sat in a drawer or safe for virtually the entirety of its life. The case sides are so sharp they might cut you! Present within the watch is a flawless Paris-signed dial with iconic Cartier blued sword hands. The watch features the original large sized octagonal sapphire cabochon crown. On the caseback we find deep crisp hallmarks and an endearing personalized engraving denoting the passing down of this watch from father to daughter. We love these personalized engravings as they add intimacy and history to the watch as it gets passed down from owner to owner. We thoroughly embrace the notion that people should engrave their watches!

This watch is already very special because of its rarity and phenomenal condition. But, it is even more special because the present watch is a very late production example. This Cintree watch dates to late 1980 or 1981. In speaking with other prominent Cartier collectors, we were not able to find another midsize Cintree with this late of a date of production. While there may be a handful of watches out there with a later serial, we are not aware of any and this is likely one of the last midsize Cintrees to be produced by Cartier.

True collectors know that you always place condition as your greatest priority when assessing a watch. This Cintree offers the astute collector a unique opportunity to enter into his or her collection a pristine example of what is perhaps one of the last midsize Cintrees ever made by Cartier.
