History and Significance
Before Franck Muller became one of the most recognizable names of the 1990s watch industry, his watches were produced on a dramatically smaller scale. Early examples came from a period when Muller was building his reputation as an independent watchmaker, combining traditional Swiss movements with cases and dials that looked unlike almost anything being offered by the established manufactures.
This reference 3870NA is an especially interesting survivor from that period. The substantial 18k yellow gold case carries the extremely early case number 11, placing it among the earliest numbered examples of the reference. Even more remarkably, the original caseback sticker remains intact. It is a small, almost disposable detail that was never expected to survive decades of ownership, yet here it is.
Inside is a manually wound Lemania chronograph movement. Lemania calibers form an important part of twentieth-century chronograph history, appearing in watches from some of Switzerland's most respected manufactures. In the Franck Muller, that traditional mechanical foundation sits behind a design that could only have come from the 1990s.
Then there is the dial. Oversized stylized Arabic numerals, a triple-register chronograph layout, and the distinctive Franck Muller signature give the watch enormous personality without relying on the dimensions associated with many of the brand's later watches.
It is an early Franck Muller in the most literal sense: low case number, Lemania chronograph, precious-metal construction, and the original details still where they belong.
Writer's Thoughts
On an early independent watch, a case number as low as 11 immediately changes the conversation. Reference 3870NA already comes from an interesting period in Franck Muller's history, but seeing such an early number alongside the original caseback sticker makes this example feel particularly special.
The condition backs it up. The solid gold case remains remarkably clean, and the watch still retains its original Franck Muller leather strap and 18k gold buckle. Turn it over and the untouched case gives you a glimpse of just how carefully this watch has been treated.
We also love that there is a Lemania chronograph inside. Franck Muller built his early reputation as a serious watchmaker, and this piece combines that mechanical credibility with the typography and design language that eventually made his name instantly recognizable. For someone interested in the earliest years of the brand rather than what Franck Muller later became, this is the kind of watch we would want.
