History and Significance
Franck Muller is one of those brands whose early history can get lost behind what came later. Before the oversized Cintrée Curvex cases, colorful numerals, and highly recognizable aesthetic became synonymous with the name, Franck Muller built a reputation around complicated watches and traditional Swiss watchmaking. Early chronographs powered by Lemania movements are an important part of that story. For the manufacture’s 30th anniversary, Franck Muller decided to revisit that period rather literally.
The Tribute Chronograph collection consisted of three different models, each produced in only 50 examples. Rather than developing an entirely new movement for the anniversary, Franck Muller reached back into its own history and used new-old-stock Lemania movements remaining from the original batch of early Franck Muller chronographs. That decision gives the collection an unusual authenticity. This was not simply an old design recreated around contemporary mechanics; an actual piece of the company’s early watchmaking was brought forward for the anniversary.
The END 39 CC2 is the silver two-register version of the group. Its Breguet numerals and restrained chronograph layout deliberately recall the sort of watches that helped establish Franck Muller before the brand developed the visual identity most collectors recognize today. There is a classical quality to the design that can almost be surprising with the Franck Muller name on the dial. Look more closely, though, and the slightly eccentric typography and proportions still provide enough personality to keep it from feeling anonymous.
The inclusion of both a closed and exhibition caseback is a particularly thoughtful part of the anniversary concept. With the closed back installed, the watch retains the traditional appearance of the early chronographs that inspired it. Swap to the exhibition back and the NOS Lemania movement becomes the focus, exposing the very thing that gives the project its historical connection. It allows the same watch to tell the story in two different ways.
The Tribute Chronograph is consequently less about celebrating 30 years with something completely new and more about remembering where Franck Muller started. That makes it an unusually self-aware anniversary watch. In a catalog famous for extravagance and complications, one of the most interesting ways to celebrate the brand was to return to a relatively simple hand-wound chronograph and the movements that were there near the beginning.
Writer's Thoughts
This is probably the side of Franck Muller that deserves considerably more attention. The silver two-register dial, Breguet numerals, and old Lemania movement feel almost disconnected from the popular image of the brand, and that contrast is exactly what makes the watch so good. It has the slightly quirky personality expected from Franck Muller without needing to shout about it. More importantly, using NOS movements from the original early chronographs makes the tribute feel genuine rather than like a modern watch wearing a vintage costume.
Among anniversary watches, that is a difficult thing to pull off. The END 39 CC2 does not simply print a commemorative number on the back and call the job finished. It reaches into the company's own history and physically brings a piece of it forward. That is a much more interesting way to celebrate 30 years.
