History and Significance
Before Franck Muller became synonymous with wildly shaped cases and increasingly theatrical complications, the watches bearing his name were often surprisingly traditional. Early Franck Muller chronographs combined classical dials with manually wound Lemania movements, reflecting the work of a watchmaker whose reputation had been built around restoration and complicated mechanical watches. Those early pieces have a character quite different from what the brand would eventually become known for. The 30th Anniversary Tribute Chronograph was created specifically to revisit that beginning.
What makes the project unusual is that Franck Muller did not simply reproduce the appearance of those early chronographs. A stock of new-old-stock Lemania movements from the original era remained, and those movements became the foundation for the anniversary series. There is something particularly satisfying about that decision. A movement originally intended for an early Franck Muller chronograph finally became one decades later.
Three versions were created for the anniversary, with each limited to 50 pieces. The END 39 CC3 is arguably the sportiest of the group, using a black dial and traditional three-register chronograph arrangement. Breguet numerals keep the connection to Franck Muller’s earlier aesthetic intact, but the darker dial changes the character considerably. It feels less like a conventional vintage-inspired dress chronograph and more like an early Franck Muller that somehow remained undiscovered until the modern era.
There is an important distinction between nostalgia and continuity, and this watch falls closer to the latter. So many anniversary editions borrow a few old design cues and recreate them with entirely contemporary components. Here, one of the most important mechanical ingredients actually comes from the history being celebrated. That gives the END 39 CC3 a connection to early Franck Muller that cannot be created through styling alone.
Writer's Thoughts
The black three-register version is the one that makes the Franck Muller connection particularly interesting. It still has all the old-world ingredients, Breguet numerals, a hand-wound Lemania chronograph, traditional typography, but the black dial gives the whole thing a little more attitude. It feels like the bridge between the quiet early watches and the much more expressive company Franck Muller eventually became.
The NOS Lemania movement is what turns the story from good to genuinely special. There is a huge difference between building a watch that looks like something from the past and actually putting one of the movements from that past inside it. Add the tiny production of 50 pieces, and the END 39 CC3 becomes one of those modern watches that feels like it was made primarily for people already interested in the deeper Franck Muller story. That is exactly the sort of anniversary watch worth paying attention to.
