History and Significance
Before Louis Vuitton became deeply involved in modern watchmaking, the company produced a handful of watches that were genuinely strange, experimental and unlike almost anything else being made by the traditional Swiss houses. The Monterey belongs firmly in that category.
Introduced around the late 1980s, the Monterey was designed by Italian architect and designer Gae Aulenti. Rather than treating the watch like a conventional piece of jewelry, Aulenti created a completely round, pebble-like case with the crown positioned at 12 o'clock. The absence of traditional lugs makes the case appear almost suspended between the two ends of the strap.
The Monterey II is particularly memorable because of its unusual calendar display. The hours occupy the center of the dial while the date is printed in bright red around its outer edge, giving the watch an appearance somewhere between a wristwatch, an instrument and a piece of postmodern industrial design.
This example becomes even more unusual thanks to its deep green lacquered case. The combination of the dark green case, white dial and bright red calendar track gives the watch an unmistakable late-20th-century character that feels completely removed from the design language of Louis Vuitton watches today.
Writer's Thoughts
There really isn't much else that looks like a Monterey II. That is the appeal. It comes from a period when Louis Vuitton could approach a watch almost purely as a design object, and Gae Aulenti clearly wasn't interested in making another traditional round watch. The crown at 12, lugless case and concentric dial layout make it immediately recognizable even without seeing the Louis Vuitton signature.
This example was also recently serviced and has been fitted with a brand-new Louis Vuitton strap, making it particularly enjoyable as a watch that can actually be worn rather than simply collected as a design curiosity.
