History and Significance
The Golden Ellipse has never needed much decoration. Introduced in 1968, its identity was built almost entirely around proportion: an unusual case somewhere between a circle and a rectangle, an exceptionally thin profile, and a dial stripped of almost everything unnecessary.
That simplicity is what makes the blue dial so important. Rather than using numerals or complications to create interest, Patek Philippe allowed color to become the centerpiece. The deep blue surface changes considerably under different lighting and contrasts beautifully with the warmth of the yellow gold case and applied markers. It is one of those combinations that became so closely associated with the Golden Ellipse that it now feels inseparable from the model itself.
Reference 3848 is particularly appealing because nothing distracts from that original idea. There is no date window, subsidiary dial, or seconds hand. Two hands, twelve markers, the Patek Philippe signature, and the Ellipse case are essentially the entire watch.
Writer's Thoughts
There is a tendency to judge vintage watches by how much they offer. More complications, more provenance, more unusual details. The Golden Ellipse works in exactly the opposite direction, and that is why we like it.
The blue dial on this 3848 is exceptionally sharp with no signs of wear, aging, or distracting marks. Against the yellow gold case, it has the exact rich contrast we hope to find on a classic Patek Philippe Ellipse.
This example also retains its original strap and the fantastic Ellipse-shaped Patek Philippe buckle. That buckle might seem like a small detail, but it completes the design beautifully. Even something as simple as fastening the watch continues the same shape that defines the case. Reference 3848 is quiet, thin, and almost impossibly simple. Put it on the wrist and there is very little left to improve.
